SAUVAGE is a process of working on stage and a principle of representation that I have been conceiving and developing with the Compagnie 13/10è en C for two years.
Born from an assiduous reading of Peter Handke’s Gaspard, born also from research on wild children, including Victor de l’Aveyron, SAUVAGE is a set of constraints and an ecosystem: not knowing, only being able to weakly anticipate, dealing with what exists in a given space, at a given time, with what is there, with those who are there, with what we are and with what we have.
Since October 2018, ten laboratory sessions have taken place to design the rules of this game. Each of them ended with a public welcome, a way to feel the palpability of the ecosystem put in place, a way also to progress on the question: how can (should) it be a spectacle?
The SAUVAGE team is composed of eleven people (artists and technicians). Three of them will take part in the Rennes laboratory next October.
SAUVAGE and the ARGOS project
The question of observation, which is at the heart of the Argos project, is also a central issue in SAUVAGE. First of all with the question we have been asking ourselves from the beginning: what are we observing? What are we paying attention to? One of the first tasks in educating a wild child, whether it is Gaspard or Victor de l’Aveyron, is that of attention. This is the first of the apprenticeships, the one we have mainly focused on. Secondly, the posture of each participant in a SAUVAGE laboratory is at the same time a position of observation and action, or, more precisely – observation being in itself an action – is at the same time a position of observing and being observed. The question being that of the resonance of the different elements (human or not) present at a given moment in the same space.
